Saving Lives With Rear View Safety Cameras: New Law Effective May 1, 2018
In 2002, pediatrician Greg Gulbransen, who dedicated his life to saving the lives of children, was backing his SUV when he ran over and killed his own 2-year-old son. Gulbransen says he used all three mirrors and looked over his shoulder as required before backing up, but that was not enough. He was unable to see his son who he thought was safely in the house.
Gulbransen decided to honor his young son by working to change laws and require rear view cameras to be added as safety devices to all vehicles. As a result of his efforts legislation was passed requiring all new cars sold in the U.S. to be equipped with rear view cameras with in-car visual displays. The law will be phased in with a certain percentage of new cars to be equipped with the rearview camera beginning in 2016. By May 1, 2018, all new cars must be equipped with rear-view cameras or they will not be able to be sold.
Rear view cameras save lives and prevent catastrophic injuries
The specific requirements as recited in the final rule issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with the effective date of May 1, 2018, are that the rear view camera must show the area behind the car that is not visible with the use of mirrors. This is expected to be accomplished by the use of rearview cameras with a screen visible to the driver. The camera will be activated when the car is put in reverse.
The automobile industry agrees that back-up cameras are valuable contributors to auto safety. Many 2015 models are already slated to have cameras included as either standard or optional equipment.
