Safe For The Holidays
When I was growing up the holidays meant a lot of travel. My family, like 107 million Americans, traveled from Dec. 23 - Jan 1. Having 3 older brothers, it was always a magic trick getting our large family into a car in any kind of timely fashion. We spent Thanksgiving and Christmas with family in Kansas City, about an hour away from home in Topeka. I fondly recall traveling to see the KC plaza lights on Thanksgiving night or falling asleep in the car on the way home from the Christmas Eve party and waking up in my bed on christmas morning.
I remember thinking that it took a long time to drive to Kansas City, over an hour in a car! However everything is relative - Kelly, my wife, has a 40 minute work commute every morning from Brooklyn to Manhattan.
Holiday Travel
Traveling during the holiday season can be stressful and dangerous. People are in a rush, traveling long distances in bad weather. According to a recent study, texting behind the wheel increases by 30% during the winter holidays. Are you traveling this month? Here's some tips from AAA to keep you safe and jolly.
Check On The Weather - Check on the conditions you will be driving through, in addition to your starting location and destination.
Winter Driving - Increase your follow distance, drive patiently.
Secure Your Valuables - Keep wrapped presents in a locked, covered storage area. Put valuables out of sight.
Keep The Kids Busy And Safe - Use whatever you can (books, games) to keep kids comfortable and stop them from distracting the driver.
