Delphi and Mobileye Team Up To Create Self-Driving System
Start your (self-driving) engines! While Ford has announced fully automated cars by 2021, and Nissan has a similar plan for 2020, two other auto suppliers have teamed up to create SAE level 4/5 automated technology.
Israel-based Mobileye, a company that specializes in computer vision systems, and auto parts supplier Delphi Automotive have joined forces to create autonomous driving systems that could enter production by 2019, and hit the market by 2021 or 2022. These off-the-shelf systems are intended for use in a wide variety of vehicles, including small cars, pickups and SUVs. Rear View Safety offers a Mobileye Collision Avoidance System.
"The Mobileye and Delphi relationship started in 2002 with the implementation of what was one of the most advanced active safety systems of the time. Our long history together is key to the success of this ambitious endeavor," said Professor Amnon Shashua, Mobileye Chairman and Chief Technology Officer said in a statement. "Our partnership with Delphi will accelerate the time to market and enable customers to adopt Level 4/5 automation without the need for huge capital investments, thereby creating a formidable advantage for them," he continued.
Mobileye will further develop signal processing and sensors, while Delphi will integrate their automated driving software algorithms.
"This partnership will allow us to give our customers an increased level of automated capabilities faster and more cost effectively. The collective expertise of our two organizations will accelerate the creation of new approaches and capabilities that would likely not have been possible working alone. This is a win-win for both companies and our customers," Kevin Clark, Delphi President and Chief Executive Officer said in a recent statement.
