Independence Day Safety Tips
4th of July is this week. That means fireworks, grilling in the backyard, and maybe even a trip to the beach with your family. Whatever you end up doing, we want you to be safe. Here are some safety tips for Independence Day.
Firework Safety
While the safest way to enjoy fireworks is attending a public fireworks show put on by professionals, if you light fireworks at home you should follow these tips.
- Never give fireworks to small children.
- Keep a bucket of water/fire extinguisher close by in case of a fire.
- Light only one firework at a time.
- Always wear eye protection when lighting fireworks.
- Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from pets and children.
- Never point fireworks toward people, animals or structures.
- Dispose of used fireworks properly, in places completely free of heat and fire.
- Never relight a “dud” firework.
Water Safety
While a lot of people hit the water to beat the heat on the 4th, it can be dangerous if the proper precautions are not taken.
- Never consume alcohol while driving a boat.
- Always wear life preservers.
- Never dive headfirst.
- Always swim with a buddy.
- Always have a first aid kid nearby.
- Drink plenty of water.
Enjoy grilling this Independence Day while also keeping you family safe. Here are some BBQ/grilling tips.
Grilling Safety
- Check gas grill hoses for cracks, holes and leaks.
- Keep children away from grills.
- Never grill in the garage or anywhere inside.
- Keep your grill at least two feet ways from branches, decks, and any outdoor equipment that can easily catch fire.
If you plan on driving anywhere, please take extra caution. Between 2008 and 2012, July 4 had an average of 127 deaths in crashes each year, according to data collected by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Driving Tips
- Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin.
- Use a designated driver.
- If you encounter a drunk driver, contact local law enforcement. (You could save a life)
- Stay alert.
If you follow these tips, you’re be sure to have a happy and safe Independence day.
