Ice Storm Safety Tips

I have weather alerts set up for 3 places. New York, where I live, Topeka, where my parents live, and the Bay Area, where 2 of brothers live with their families.

It's been an interesting week. The Bay Area is officially not in a drought after a drought monitor issued Thursday. Powerful storms in the area have caused at least 40% of the state to enter a drought.

Even though it's still winter, yesterday in New York it was around 70°. It was so amazing. I wore a t-shirt in January. Then there's Jupiter.

Winter Storm Jupiter

Winter storm Jupiter is a huge multi-day ice storm that is expected to cut power, and immobilize travel in much of the Midwest. Some states have already declared a state of emergency. Ice storms are not joke. Everything freezes. Trees and power lines can fall because of the heavy weight. Here are some helpful tips if you are preparing for the storm.

  • Stay away from downed power lines (treat all downed lines as live)
  • Stay inside
  • Close off unneeded rooms
  • Have your emergency kit ready (Batteries, flashlights, enough food for a few days)
  • Cover windows at night
  • Put towels/rags underneath doors to keep heat in
  • Don't forget the bottled water!

It's important to prepare for the power to go out. I am very thankful emergency workers will be working around the clock to help everyone in need, but it's still important to be prepared.
