We love our fleet customers! Our fleets all have their own unique histories and service our communities in many different ways. We want to show our appreciation with our new Five Star Fleet series. We spoke to Henry W. Bergman III, about his companies’ rich history, their preemptive safety strategy, and how Rear View Safety helped.
Note: This interview has been edited and condensed for clarity.
RVS: Tell me a little bit about Henry Bergman Inc's history.
Henry W. Bergman III: The company started in 1912, with my Great Grandfather, Henry W. Bergman I. We were doing bridges, roads, and concrete block back then, and we’ve been in the same location ever since. After WWII, his son Eldo took over. He had 14 children, and 2 of them, James and Henry II., my father, were partners after him. Now it’s me and my cousin Paul. I take care of the shop as the prep foreman and Paul is learning the reins on the bidding from his father James.
RVS: Is there a Henry W. Bergman IV yet?
HBIII: I got all girls so far, but we’ll see…
RVS: How was the company's focus changed over the years?
HBIII: We do everything asphalt related, we specialize in Chipseal and cold mix, but we’ll do anything with hot mix as well. We have a fleet of 11 dump trucks + auxiliary vehicles for a total of 25 trucks.
RVS: How did your RVS relationship begin?
HBIII:What happened was, Chipseal trucks are pulled backwards by the equipment, so when we were doing county programs, the trucks started backing into each other, throwing off our operations. One year we had 4 trucks back in to each other. That’s 4 hoods, 4 radiators. Dump trucks have the worst blind spots in construction.
I felt like we needed a preemptive, not reactive solution. So I did some online research, and RVS's website had a lot of good information. I've done enough to know that when you get a product, you're partnering with the company, and if they can't support what you sell, you're wasting your time and money. "
HBIII: We’re using the 3 Camera RVS-062710 Backup Camera System With Quad View Monitor System, outfitting all of our dump trucks with them. Those trucks have a small mirror. and there’s lots of objects on them, so when you’re backing down the road, or around a curve, these really come in handy. Loving the trigger feature with the turn signal, mounted in the hinge of the door, it helps with maneuvers such as merging onto the highway. I’m excited that you can put these on semis and trailers, and if they continue working well, I’m going to look into getting them for our tankers that carry the Chipseal as well.
