Chevy Call Me Out App Aims To Curb Distracted Driving

The Call Me Out app was the winning idea developed during a Chevy-sponsored hackathon with students at Wayne State University in Detroit. This app uses recorded messages from the driver's friends and family to deter distracted driving. These audio messages combined with an image of a wagging finger keep the driver focused on the road.

Call Me Out uses the phone's built-in accelerometer and GSP to determine if it picked up whenever speeds increase above 5 MPH.

“As the father of two daughters, I am keenly aware of all the perils that my children face out in the world on a daily basis, and that is why it is so important for GM and Chevrolet to offer technologies that help all of us become safer drivers,” said Alan Batey, president of GM North America and head of Global Chevrolet in a release.

Distracted Driving

According to the NHTSA, 3,450 people were killed by distracted driving in 2016. The organization also states that 481,000 drivers use their phones during daylight hours.

This isn't the only app used to fight distracted driving, or the first company to fight this problem. Call Me Out is available free from the Google Play Store for Android users.
