Bridgestone Event Tests Teenagers on Driving Skills | Road Safety

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -This weekend, teens put their driving skills to the test at Bridgestone's Teens Drive Smart event.

Crews set up a safety course along Opryland Drive, which featured two defensive driving lots and even a distracted driving course.

"We got to drive BMWs and learned how to maintain control around slick curves at high speeds," teen driver Melissa Bohrman said.

"For the distracted driving course, we drove around in golf carts and attempted to text several words without hitting any cones, it was hard and showed just how dangerous texting while driving can be," she explained.

Bohrman and others drove two times around a small winding track in a golf cart. Each time, participants texted "Bridgestone Teens Drive Smart" into their cellphones.

Bohrman made it through the first try without hitting anything, but the second around wasn't as smooth.

"We hit two cones, and in real life, those cones could have been other people,” she said.

Bridgestone's driving experts said very few students make it through the texting course without hitting a cone.

They hope Sunday's techniques will help prevent future tragedies.
