Boating Safety Tips
Summertime means it's time to get out on the water! New York recently opened new ferry routes between Manhattan and Brooklyn. As a person who lives in a somewhat inaccessible part of South Brooklyn, I will use this to travel to Manhattan and the beach. It's going to be a great summer! Will you be riding or driving a boat this summer? Here are some safety tips from Discover Boating.
Safe Boating Tips
- Check the weather - Always check weather conditions before setting sail. Notice dark clouds, changing winds or sudden drops in temperature? It's time to get off the water.
- Make and follow a pre-departure checklist - Prepare for everything. Here's a good example.
- Use common sense - always operate at a safe speed and stay alert.
- Designate an Assistant Skipper - Let someone know where you are going and when you are expected back
- Wear lifejackets - Make sure everyone has one!
- Avoid alcohol - The probability of being involved in a boating accident is doubled when alcohol is involved.
- Learn to swim - Local organizations, including the Red Cross, offer swim training.
- Take a Boating Course - It's important to be familiar with boating safety rules. You can even take courses online.
- Free Vessel Safety Check - The US Coast Guard offers free vessel safety checks
