Every day distracted driving accidents in the United States kill over eight people and injure 1,000. This preventable epidemic must be stopped and we can stop it if we all work tougher. Driving requires your full attention. Driving requires your full attention. We can save lives by eliminating distractions to focus on the road.
5 Ways To Avoid Distracted Driving
- Don't Do It - What's the best way to avoid distracted driving? Don't do it. You know if your heart of hearts that checking your phone or eating while driving is dangerous. Respect yourself and others on the road by not driving distracted.
- Let Your Passengers Do The Work - As the driver you have one job, drive! Your passengers have their hands free, so let them run the GPS or control the radio. My wife Kelly and I don't drive very often, but when we do she drives and I control the route. It's a great system.
- Speak Up - If you see someone texting while driving (or driving distracted in a different way), let them know you are not comfortable with their behavior. People listen to their friends!
- If You're Drowsy, Pull Over - If you feel tired, get off the road. Drowsiness increases the risk of a crash by nearly 4 times. Rear View Safety offers a variety of driver fatigue systems to detect drowsiness.
- No Snacking - Eat before or after your trip. You may think you are saving time by eating while driving, but food spills are a huge distraction.
Remember, you are setting an example with your driving. Make sure you are modeling attentive driving every time you are behind the wheel.
