Wired Vs. Wireless Rear View Cameras
Safety equipment continues to improve and upgrades can really make the task of driving much easier and safer for all involved. If you are looking into getting a rear view camera system, you might be wondering about the comparison of wired systems vs wireless. It all comes down to the importance you place on price, quality and convenience.
Why Purchase a Backup Rear View Camera?
With a rear view camera, many common risks and oversights can be reduced or eliminated from the safety equation of operating a motor vehicle. Whether you are a business, large vehicle operator, construction equipment operator or common driver, you may find that rear view camera systems:
- Eliminate blind spots – especially in larger vehicles
- Allow for easier trailer maneuvering
- Increases safety for pedestrians walking behind a larger bus, van, RV or truck
- Alerts you when you are getting too close to an object or a small child unexpectedly walks behind your vehicle as you back up
- Provides clear visibility before starting a propeller or motor on the back of a boat
Wired Rear View Camera Systems
These systems are high quality in their picture and very reliable, but you will be sacrificing convenience. The installation can be tricky if your vehicle is not already wired to accommodate a camera system. Hiring a professional is a quicker and convenient option, usually requiring 1-2 hours of work, but could double or triple the overall cost of a camera system for a car or truck. For longer vehicles, like RVs, the installation process is much more difficult and may make the wireless camera a better option.
Wireless Rear View Camera Systems
Wireless, of course, doesn’t require a cable or wiring process. However, the wireless systems are susceptible to radio frequency interference and distance (for longer RVs, large trucks or trailers). Some radio interference can be avoided with a wireless camera system that uses digital signals, but prepare for random interference to just be a part of the wireless system. Wireless cameras are more convenient to install, with a simple dashboard monitor and small rear camera with receivers and transmitters attached.
The Final Word
While there are features for you to consider when making your choice, we encourage you to first decide on a wired or wireless system to narrow down your choices. For most situations, we believe the wired system is the better option, with a dependable signal and better picture.
